The cornflower is an annual, herbaceous plant with conspicuous bright blue flowers. You can find it especially at edges of cornfields, hence the name. The seeds are silver-gray, hairy, and have a circle of red hairs, which serves for seed dispersal by wind. Cornflowers are bioindicators. If a field was fertilized intensely the year before, it grows only poorly. The flowers are edible and are a beautiful eye-catcher in salads.
