Geraniums, scientifically known as Pelargonium, are popular balcony and bedding plants. If they are kept cool, but frost-free during hibernation they can become several years old. The scientific name “Pelargonium” is derived from the shape of the fruits: they are elongated like a crane’s bill. New plants can be grown from cuttings. Scented geraniums have an intensive smell of mint, rose, lemon, or spices. Essential oils are extracted from them.
