White Clover is one of the most widespread plants in Germany. It grows virtually everywhere. In addition, a Clover leaf, called a Shamrock, is the unofficial National Symbol of Ireland. It belongs to the legumes, which also include peas. Thus it is not very astounding, that clover seeds look much alike minute, golden brown peas. It establishes a symbiosis with rhizobia- a kind of bacteria. They are fixing nitrogen from the air and store it. That makes clover an important plant for green manuring. The white blossoms are an important and popular pasture for bees. A lot of insects visit the flowers, which are rich on nectar. But they can only be pollinated by bees and digger wasps.
