 +Tomatoes originates from Central and South America. Since about 200 BC, they are cultivated by humans. In 1500 they came to Europe. The first varieties that had arrived in Europe has yellow fruits and hardly anybody wanted to try for fear of poisoning themselves. The scientific name of tomato is Lycopersicon esculentum, which means something like edible wolf peach. The fruits of tomatoes are botanically berries. They may contain two or more seed compartments. Besides the well known red fruits, there are also varieties with yellow, orange and also dark, almost black fruit and speckled varieties.
