The small wild strawberries are part of the rosacea family, as their white flowers show. They grow in light shady places such as under broadleaf trees. They spread with runners. The seeds of the wild strawberries are the small, hard, green nuts that sit on the red pulp. Over the winter, the nuts often sit on the drying fruits and fall down in the spring. The strawberryplants are indecidous. In gardens they are used as shrubs. They have no special requirements for the soil. The white flowers of wild strawberries appear running from June to September. After a short time, the fruits ripen. The red fruits botanically are not berries but receptacles.
